Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical networking technology transports multiple data streams, protocols and applications over a single pair of fibers. Wavelengths provide end users the flexibility, scalability and security of dark fiber without having to purchase or manage the electronics.
WDM longhaul services are much more practical for the enterprise customer than leasing dark fiber. WDM provides all the flexibility of dark fiber without the hassle of managing optical equipment spread out over long distances. Dark fiber requires regeneration sites that will house equipment along the network route. By utilizing an existing carrier’s backbone, you avoid having to secure regeneration space, purchase equipment and maintain a network that spans hundreds or thousands of miles.
NEF works with a variety of carriers that specialize in offering longhaul WDM networks. Many carriers are completing backbone or equipment upgrades that will allow them to offer new services and more compelling price points.
