In response to growing customer demand for bandwidth and colocation, Boston-area telecommunications firm adds senior executive

October 1, 2009—Framingham, Mass.—  Even in a tough economy, businesses are increasingly in need of connectivity for data traffic and new bandwidth-intensive applications. Framingham-based telecom company New England Fiber, Inc. (NEF), is answering the demand for bigger, more robust communications networks and announced today that it has hired telecom relationship-building specialist Mike Spieldenner as the new Vice President of Business Development. NEF is a leading resource for high capacity networks, dark fiber, colocation and procurement services and consulting.

Spieldenner brings over 20 years of experience in the telecom industry with senior management roles in operations, engineering, and business development for companies such as RCN, Yipes Enterprise Services, Teligent, Ram Mobile Data and Skytel.  His recent consulting projects included designing, deploying and selling a new fiber optic network in New York City.  Spieldenner was able to successfully spearhead this initiative and help the company close $3 million in revenue within two months of launch.  His familiarity and expertise extends to the realm of data centers where he recently sourced a new data center site for a Fortune 500 by researching all of the potential facilities, studying the existing fiber infrastructure and negotiating directly with the real estate firms.

NEF will leverage Spieldenner’s breadth of data network experience and knowledge to help the company achieve milestones such as developing new carrier and enterprise business relationships, negotiating contracts with service providers, delivering the highest possible levels of customer support and expanding professional services via FiberLocator.

“After my years of working in both sales and delivery roles, I am excited to join the team at NEF.  Their goals of providing top-notch customer service and utilizing industry leading tools to deliver creative solutions based on real business needs are well-aligned with my personal sales philosophy,” stated Spieldenner.  “If the goals they have laid out before me are any indication, I am looking forward to a very productive and busy tenure with them.”

President of NEF Mike Murphy added, “Adding Mike Spieldenner to our management team really brings depth to our impressive line-up of talented telecom professionals.  We believe our company is only as good our teammates so we are committed to hiring the best and brightest…and, of course, Mike is no exception.”

One Summer Street Raises the Bar for Data Centers

Written today at 04:20PM by Elizabeth Sklaroff
Recently, NEF had the opportunity to tour Markley Group’s Boston facility One Summer Street. We were so impressed with the attention to detail, overall site features, and technology that we wanted to share a few highlights.

With a focus and understanding on what space would yield the best operations, Markley has created the preeminent facilities for each city they have entered. Specifically, One Summer Street was selected for its strategic location that serves all of the major fiber loops in the Boston area plus its ideal construction of masonry block, steel frame and poured concrete floors.

Markley invested over $46 million to make One Summer Street the most significant telecommunications/data center in the entire New England region. The facility is home to over 40 domestic and international carriers such as Comcast, Qwest, France Telecom and Level (3). One Summer Street is a carrier neutral facility so tenants have the ability to select and freely connect to any fiber network provider that has space in the building. This competitive landscape for transit business is a huge benefit for the tenants.

In addition to the strategic attributes of One Summer Street, the physical building was designed and built with the highest standards in mind. The 800,000 square feet facility has a 2.5 acre footprint with six diverse fiber entrances spread throughout the building. It also has secure, underground loading facilities that are available 24x7 and capable of accommodating 18-wheel trucks.

Just as impressive as the physical attributes are the pains that Markley Group has taken to provide best in class electrical power. One Summer Street has eight primary power feeders with two diverse entrances and network architecture that eliminates the single point failure commonly found in radial feeders. These feeder routes are completely underground which removes weather and traffic-related disruptions that are so often associated with suburban distribution. The facility has not experienced a power outage in over nine years according NSTAR records.

One Summer Street was designed to handle any electrical failures by installing very well-conceived redundancies within its UPS/Generator Power system. The building has 22 generators with 88,000 gallons of fuel onsite. The back-up systems can provide up to 18 seconds of power when an outage occurs as an additional redundancy. For optimal cooling, the typical computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units are dual fed from two different generator-backed switchboards and are nominal 30 ton down flow units.

Finally and most-importantly, One Summer Street is New England’s only carrier class, mission critical facility with over 40 separate and distinct networks delivering fiber. In fact, One Summer Street’s well-designed attributes are so impressive that some carriers have abandoned their own suburban buildings for the reliability of the infrastructure provided by Markley’s One Summer Street. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEF to Represent Owner of Europe’s Highest Capacity All-Optical Network
NEF to Provide US Channel Solutions to euNetworks

Framingham, Mass.– 19 May 2009, NEF Inc., a leading dark fiber and lit service agency, has partnered with euNetworks, Europe’s foremost provider of mission-critical, high performance networking solutions, to create and design optimal communications networks for large corporations, carriers and service providers. Through the relationship, NEF will be able to source euNetworks’ low latency optical connections between key interconnection and data center locations for US-based companies wanting to connect within Europe as well via trans-Atlantic connections from the continental US.

With leading telecommunications databases FiberLocator and FindADataCenter.com, NEF empowers clients with both network information and professional services to create robust, scalable and affordable networks. euNetworks has earned a reputation as being the preferred method for delivering high-performance services over their wholly owned, billion euro, all-fiber optic network that connects the major cities and economies of Europe.  This partnership will allow US and European clients to utilize NEF’s expertise in designing efficient optical networks to build door-to-door private fiber solutions, including data center integration and network design and deployment.

The euNetworks-NEF relationship means a new level of information and service for global organizations based in the US wanting the fastest speeds and lowest latency routes in Europe. While NEF’s FiberLocator database catalogs the majority of fiber assets in the US, housing nearly 75 telecommunications provider network maps and information, the euNetworks information will add a new dimension to the database. With the inclusion of euNetworks details and fibre maps, NEF bolsters the FiberLocator value proposition and enables enterprises to leverage the networks with diversity, reliability and low latency.

"euNetworks guarantees the highest levels of service and availability, and we were looking for a US partner who embodies those same ideals," says Barry Nolan, Chief Operating Officer of euNetworks. ”NEF has earned the reputation among enterprises and carriers for reliability as well as for understanding the complexities of multipoint optical networks and data centre applications. For euNetworks, NEF was simply the right fit to represent our networks in the US.”

“Our partnership with euNetworks enables us to create and deploy stable, secure networks, higher speeds and competitive rates,” says Michael Murphy of NEF.  “With euNetworks’ world-class custom optical network solutions, we can satisfy the unique needs of domestic enterprise businesses, carriers and service providers who want to establish or maintain a presence in Europe.”

Mohawk Industries Connects to American Fiber Systems Atlanta Backbone

Written today at 01:45PM by Michael Murphy

World-wide flooring producer and distributor, Mohawk Industries has consolidated IT functionality and connected their Marietta locations and remote data centers to the American Fiber Systems' Atlanta backbone.

The move, which involved fiber routing to the company’s West Oaks facility, consolidates three separate Kennesaw locations previously tapped out of bandwidth.  Cost prohibitive OC3s and the inability to add additional T1 lines prompted Mohawk to connect the locations and data centers to AFS’s fully protected redundant fiber network.  The move significantly increased the speed of secure data transfer and daily business tasks, including ordering, employee records, and e-mail/web based systems.

An NEF partner, AFS recently completed its managed wavelength services addition in response to demand from Atlanta enterprises for more accessible and cost effective bandwidth.  These upgraded service offerings give Atlanta businesses a choice of wavelength speeds at competitive prices, allowing them to achieve more intricate business continuity and protect themselves with bullet-proof disaster recovery services.  By switching to AFS’s Metro Ethernet network, Mohawk significantly increased the size of their network bandwidth at this location while keeping costs in line.  In addition, they resolved multiple bandwidth capacity issues and are now connected to easily scalable bandwidth with extensive growth potential.

According to Barb Goldworm, as the cost of energy rises "green" operations are becoming more significant to the data center community as they hold the opportunity for substantial cost savings.

Goldworm says, "It now costs more just for the energy to power the servers than it does for the servers themselves."

The Efficient Next Gen Datacenter with Barb Goldworm, Part II

Written today at 01:41PM by Michael Murphy
In her recent presentation, “The Efficient Next Gen Datacenter,” Barb Goldworm gave the good news:  "IT has the opportunity to directly contribute to the bottom line through a variety of technologies that we have available today. We see IT being more a part of the partnership within businesses today where IT CIOs are being asked, 'how can you help us with this financial issue rather than just having budgets cut?' IT has an opportunity today to do that through things like consolidation, optimization and automation, doing more with what is in the infrastructure, making the infrastructure work better, making the infrastructure more efficient, making users more efficient and increasing user productivity."
