Michael Murphy of NEF, Inc., Highlights the Growing Demand for Colocation
Murphy, President of NEF, Inc., and founder of FindADataCenter.com, along with Aaron Loehr, CEO and President of Bandwidth Advisors and Chris Palermo, Founder of Global Communication Networks, Inc., addressed the trends in data center colocation to the audience comprised of telecommunications agents and media. With questions that focused on market demand, components, suppliers and sales, the three did not stray far from their original intent – to create consistency in the colocation arena.
Murphy spoke specifically about his experience with colocation, using his two organizations, NEF and FindADataCenter.com, as examples. Murphy spoke about how mounting data storage requirements, disaster recovery and business continuity goals are causing an increasing number of companies to outsource their data centers.
Market Demand
According to Murphy, more customers are looking to colocate because they have run out of power and space in their campus data centers. In addition, they are facing stricter regulatory compliance, growing insurance criteria and an increase in real estate costs.
Although the key market segments for colocation are financial, retail and medical, FindADataCenter.com is seeing demand come from a wide range of companies seeking services as small as single dedicated servers to services as large as 10,000 sq. ft. of dedicated space.
Components
FindADataCenter.com’s goal is to provide for those customers requiring private cages or suites and connectivity, which often requires DWDM metro optical networks to connect to HQ and PoP locations. Murphy also suggested that power has become an important determining factor in choosing the right data center for colocation. High density service architectures drive a large amount of power and cooling and not every facility, even if it has available space, has the power available to support customer applications.
Network connectivity is also a key component. Data centers that have multiple metro fiber providers tend to be a better fit for FindDataCenter.com customers. The number of IP providers at a site becomes less relevant when designing a WDM network for customers since they typically add a carrier hotel as a node on the network. This affords customers more choices for IP at a lower cost.

Mike Murphy Creates “Colocation Consortium”
This comes at a crucial time as colocation sales continue to increase and the need for better relationships and agreements with providers is at an all-time high. NEF Lights Up Times Square
December 17, 2007 (Framingham, Mass.) Have you ever wondered how that HUGE curved electronic billboard on Times Square in New York City can keep live news and financial data scrolling continuously? The dark fiber experts at NEF, Inc., a Boston-based telecommunications consulting firm, sourced a custom optical network to keep the data live and feeding uninterrupted across one of Times Square’s most notable attractions: the seven-story TV screen.
The enormous screen is visible for several city blocks and helps to make Times Square one of the most recognizable landscapes in Manhattan. The content for that screen is created and managed by a computer in an office in Times Square. That data and content rides over a fiber optic network to get from the computer where it was created to the big screen you see.
NEF, a leader in enterprise dark fiber solutions, was enlisted to help connect the video CGI equipment to the big electronic billboard, which features live stock quotes and up to the minute news and information. NEF sourced a dark fiber network to carry the video signal from its point of origin to the screen where it is displayed.

Consolidation Drives 10 Gig Ethernet Growth
Andrew Schmitt from Nyquist Capital has posted some notes and observations from the LightReading Ethernet Conference on Oct. 15-17. This includes a summary of the keynote from Level 3 (LVLT) senior VP Jeff Tench on trends in their Gigabit Ethernet business.
Andrew shares a number of interesting data points from the presentation. Here are a few highlights:
* Level3 has 500 active 10GbE ports today.
* Customers are approaching them looking for 10GbE hookups as they
consolidate data centers into a single location to reduce costs.
* (Growth of edge connections) is driving a need for very large, cheap
10GbE switches with 64 to 512 10GbE ports. This was echoed by
Equinix (EQIX) two days later at the Gilder Telecosm.
When a data center consolidation reduces the number of facilities, it concentrates more bandwidth-apps in a single location. For companies consolidating a network of data centers, a consolidation also can extend the geographic distance between data centers and create lag issues (as reported by the Defense Contract Management Agency).
